Marcus’ Introductory Piece

As a writer, my interests are tailored to law and politics. I have been previously involved in these fields and believe civic engagement among youth participants is paramount for creating meaningful impact and ensuring our voices are heard, especially considering we cannot vote. For me, being a writer for this project means covering the most prevalent issues by becoming involved to fully encapsulate the story. It is our responsibility as writers to ensure we have covered all our bases so that when it becomes time to put pen to paper, there are no holes in our narrative, and no stones left unturned. This is especially true in the social justice world, as it is vital to guarantee that we truly make an impact.

The story covering the issue is the first step, but for our goals to be achieved, it’s important that we also provide readers with a way to get involved in helping solve such problems. As an editor, I firmly believe that our chosen words hold significant importance. People have opinions, and from my experience in politics, the words you choose can cause some to refuse to listen entirely. I believe adherence to one side over another in politics risks the project's reach. Through my work with the GroupChat for Change, I am committed to finding common ground with the aim that both sides of the political spectrum can engage in our work with an open mind.
