Artist's Statement:

While creating this piece, I was inspired by the equestrian fashion of the 1920s. Riding events were one of the earliest instances in which women were able to wear pants in social settings. Although fashion norms of the era were rapidly changing, pants had yet to become widely acceptable for women to wear in public, especially in higher class settings. However, sporting events were one of the few instances in which it was socially acceptable for women to prioritize mobility and practicality over fashion. I think it is interesting how changes in fashion standards are reflective of societal shifts in gender norms. I used a strong pose and the striking shade of “Victory Red” to illustrate how fashion and femininity can be used as a tool for empowerment and self-assurance.
