Krubel’s Introductory Piece

Hi, my name is Krubel Berhe. I'm 16 years old and a junior at Salpointe Catholic High School. As far back as I can remember, I've always held an extreme admiration and love for film and pop culture. I’ve always found it beautiful that different people from around the globe can communicate themselves and their cultures through art. Distinct displays of life, love, and heartbreak are shown through a different lens formed from the artist's unique life experiences and beliefs. However, I’ve also always been conscious of my identity and how that clashes with my environment. Growing up as a gay black kid in a conservative environment has always been a struggle and a blessing. In one way, it’s affected my mental health and well-being drastically, but on the other hand, it's offered me so much perspective and knowledge on life. These experiences, for better or worse, have shaped me into the person I am today, and I couldn't be prouder. I have a broader worldview and understanding of the human condition, as well as the confusing thing we call life. It's because of these experiences and revelations that I’ve found what I wish to spend the rest of my days doing. I desire to make art that reflects my culture and experiences. I strive to spread awareness for my community and open doors for those who are overlooked based on the color of their skin or their sexual orientation. With so many continuing struggles within society, keeping pace can be exhausting and emotionally draining. Yet, almost every issue to take root in our world has been illustrated by an artist through film. Whether it be subtle, subtextual, or central themes and messaging, nearly every film has something to express about the world we live in. My mission in writing for the GroupChat for Change is to shine a spotlight on individuals and stories conveyed through film and art that often are left in the dark. I look forward to writing for the GroupChat for Change alongside my talented peers and hope to make a lasting impact on someone with my words.
